This module explores the core principles of advocacy and how they can be effectively applied in everyday practice. Participants will examine a practical set of principles to guide their work in complex situations, ensuring advocacy remains rights-based and ethical.

Focusing on the right to make decisions, this module provides tools and strategies to identify, understand, and uphold a person’s will and preferences — particularly in everyday situations. It also explores the unintended consequences of not respecting people’s will and preference, and aligns with supported decision-making principles under the UNCRPD and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015.

This module supports participants in planning and delivering advocacy that is both effective and ethically grounded. Topics include identifying advocacy issues, exploring desired and acceptable outcomes, selecting appropriate advocacy pathways, and documenting plans to ensure the work remains person-led and rights-focused.

Clear, persuasive writing is a key advocacy skill. This module focuses on how to produce effective written communication that supports individuals' rights and needs. Emphasis is placed on clarity, accuracy, and using written tools to challenge decisions or influence outcomes.

This practical module covers essential skills for face-to-face advocacy, including building relationships, preparing for meetings, and using tools such as agendas and meeting environments to help people engage and influence outcomes. It also covers how to document agreed actions and use them to follow through on advocacy goals.

Advocates often encounter resistance from systems, professionals, or gatekeepers. This module prepares participants to respond effectively when advocacy is challenged. Learners will reflect on how resistance impacts them personally and develop strategies for constructive challenge, managing conflict, and keeping the person’s voice central throughout.
