Flip the Script

Flip the Script ⋆

We train you to support adults with intellectual disabilities to develop decision making and self advocacy skills.

  • Flip the Script is an innovative training program for Health and Social Care Professionals working with adults with intellectual disabilities. The Flip the Script method is a practical, evidence-based group facilitation model designed to build real-life decision-making skills. It shifts facilitators into a supportive but non-directive role, allowing participants to take charge, make mistakes, experience risk, and increase personal agency.

  • Under the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, Health and Social Care professionals have a clear responsibility to support people to make their own decisions. Advocacy work, person-centred planning, and rights-based practice all depend on people being able to express and act on their own preferences.

But in many services, creating real opportunities to build those decision-making skills is a challenge. Time pressures, risk concerns, and service routines often mean decisions are made for people, even when we have the best of intentions.

Research shows that decision-making is a skill that develops through practice, not just explanation or observation. Flip the Script responds to this by giving professionals a straightforward, structured way to create these opportunities within existing models of service.

You’ll learn to facilitate a short-term group where adults with intellectual disabilities practise making decisions, taking the lead, and shaping outcomes with support, but not direction.

It’s practical, rights-based, and grounded in the real world. And it works.

  • Two-day intensive training teaches you the Flip the Script facilitation method.

Weekly support sessions run alongside your own Flip the Script group to reflect, troubleshoot, and build skills as the group progresses.

Your group runs for a defined period, focused on a shared goal, guided but not directed by you.

Outcome: Participants show measurable growth in decision-making and self-advocacy.

  • Flip the Script is designed for professionals working in health and social care settings who want to build real decision-making skills with the people they support.

    It’s for you if:
